Accelerating Fintech Innovation with a Modern API Ecosystem and Seamless Developer Experience

A leading private-sector commercial bank in APAC  wanted to strengthen its position in the fintech space by creating a developer-friendly ecosystem on top of its core banking services. Its goal was to make it easy for third-party developers and fintech partners to integrate the bank’s services into their products.

To achieve this, the bank planned to launch a fintech sandbox, where developers could access and experiment with the bank’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and seamlessly build new solutions. However, their existing infrastructure posed a challenge – 45 internal services were built using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and stored as Web Services Description Language (WSDL) files. To modernize the infrastructure, these files needed to be converted to Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs to make integration seamless. This transformation required expertise in Apigee and Node.js, which the bank lacked in-house.

Additionally, it required a developer portal to provide third-party developers easy access to APIs along with the necessary documentation. Recognizing these challenges, the bank turned to Material for its deep technical expertise in API management and developer enablement.

  • Built a secure Drupal-based developer portal on Apigee, providing a branded frontend and a content management system (CMS) that facilitates collaboration, structured access to APIs and API documentation for third-party developers

  • Enabled easy retrieval of codes, URLs and integration resources, eliminating the need for developers to interact directly with the Apigee interface

  • Developed an automated pipeline to convert WSDL files into REST APIs and onboard them to the sandbox

  • Pulled endpoints from Apigee into Drupal, enabling developers to interact with and contribute API-related content like submitting feedback, feature requests and share content, which is synced with the Apigee platform for broader access and consumption

  • Bundled API products, allowing tiered access based on user requirements

  • Helped foster community engagement within the Drupal portal to enable hackathons and API product summits, encouraging collaboration and innovation

With the integration of Drupal and Apigee, Material helped the bank to expand its API footprint by providing APIs via sandbox environments, allowing third-party apps to consume their APIs and experiment with them or partner with the bank for product development. The developer portal increased the reusability of solutions and helped bring services to market faster, reducing the time by 20%. It also enhanced the bank’s capability to capture new use cases across multiple channels.

The platform provides a secure, scalable and user-friendly environment for developers, enhancing API adoption with an intuitive dashboard. Concurrent testing and development has streamlined the app development cycle, reducing reliance on specialized in-house resources.  End-to-end API management on the Apigee platform has strengthened the client’s API ecosystem, empowering developers and customers while driving API modernization.
