Helping a Burger Brand Revamp Online Ordering

After its founding in 2010 by four friends with a passion for craft beer, handcrafted burgers and freshly baked buns, Hopdoddy Burger Bar quickly became a classic in Austin, Texas. But while foodies loved the distinctive burgers and extensive menu of salads and shakes, the online ordering experience was less satisfying. Hopdoddy approached Material to create a vibrant digital experience that would fully reflect its unique brand and culture, help the company broaden its audience, and enable it to increase the number of locations nationwide.
  • Conducted Design Research – including Design Innovation Deep Dives, Experience Journey Mapping, and Participatory Observation – to understand what customers loved about the Hopdoddy experience.

  • Conducted in-depth interviews with general managers and waitstaff to learn about the brand’s customer-first approach.

  • Built custom integrations to Hopdoddy’s tech stack.

  • Mirrored the in-store customer experience online, through language, iconography and module design.

  • Leveraged APIs from online ordering and loyalty platforms Olo and Paytronix to create a flawless digital experience.

The final product carries Hopdoddy’s brand forward through the online ordering process, empowering customers to skip the line, but not miss out on the experience. After the launch, Hopdoddy saw a 7% increase in average order value and an 8% increase in basket size in the first three months alone. The company is on a roll, expanding at a rate of 8-12 restaurants per year
